Jennifer: “Thank you so much for having me. It’s a pleasure. I love talking about all these things, so I’m really excited to be here.”
Cameron: “Absolutely! I love having you. Thank you for taking the time, especially with how busy you are – growing the practice, being a mom, wearing all the hats. We were talking offline about how busy we are and the challenges. How do you navigate being a parent and a practice owner, business owner, and all the other hats that you wear in your life? How do you manage the time?”
Jennifer: “You know, I don’t know if I’m perfect at this yet, and I don’t know if it ever really gets better. When everyone says we’re always looking for the balance of life, I don’t really think there’s ever a true balance. I think we fluctuate. There are things that are going to require more demand at different times.”
“I’m very fortunate that my husband takes a lot of things off my plate. I always tell everybody that I really couldn’t do what I’m doing without him, because with two children, you just can’t do all of those things. I think the biggest thing is trying to be mindful of time – when you’re at work, you’re at work, and when you have those moments with your children, you try to be present.”
“I know sometimes that’s not always easy, but I continue to make a really conscious effort because those years we’re never going to get back. The business will still be here. It’s about trying to balance when we can, or to shift when we can, and to find those people – whether it’s a spouse, friends, or family – to help offset some of that. One person cannot do it alone. You’ll just struggle and it will not be good in any area if you try to do it alone.”
Cameron: “I 100% agree. It’s very challenging being present as a business owner. How old are your kids?”
Jennifer: “They’re six and eight, so they’re really getting to that point where sports are taking over our lives a little bit. Again, you’re just trying to fit it all in. I find being very strategic with time helps. If on the weekends I have to do something, I’ll say, ‘I’m going upstairs to the office for two hours’ and just ask them to let me be, and then I’m all yours. They’re better because they know – they set the timer and they’re like, ‘Okay, it’s been two hours, your time’s up, out of the office!’”
Cameron: “I love that idea – having the timer. I see my wife doing that too with different ways of managing time with toys or activities. I have two children as well, so I understand about siblings fighting. That’s a good point about being upstairs and focused because you know you only have a certain amount of time to get the job done. Then when you come out of the work environment, you’re focused on family.”
“We face so many challenges with the phone in our pocket – the noise, the urgency, somebody calling about an appointment or texting or DMing. It’s super challenging. I encourage the audience to take that advice – do the timer thing, put the phone down, be present. It’s so hard because I have two kids too, and they’re in traveling cheer now, which is a whole new ball game.”
Jennifer: “I think in the beginning it’s harder, and then as you grow, we maybe get better about delegation or people come onto our teams that we can delegate to. But training and going into a lot of practices – I’ve had the opportunity in the last few months – it is a struggle when you see people just starting. This is not an easy thing to do.”
“Having worked in critical care for a really long time – I spent a decade as a nurse practitioner in the ICU – sometimes in my mind I think, ‘God, it feels so much easier to save someone’s life’ because you become very systematized in medicine. When you’re dealing with really sick people, it’s very algorithmic. But then you enter this world where there are so many unknowns, and that sometimes is so unsettling. You make mistakes – you hope not to, but those happen. It’s just hard, but we learn and it gets easier.”
