#71: Stop Doing Everything And Run Your Craft

Description

Cameron Hemphill, host of the Medical Millionaire podcast, emphasizes the importance of focusing on one’s craft in the medical esthetics field. He advises practitioners to enhance their skills through continuous learning, networking, and attending trainings. Hemphill stresses the value of outsourcing non-core tasks like finance management and marketing to specialists. He highlights the necessity of delegation and automation to scale operations effectively. Examples of successful practitioners like Dr. Gretchen Frieling and Shelby Miller are cited to illustrate the benefits of investing in one’s craft and leveraging technology. Hemphill concludes by promoting Growth 99 University for further education and support.

hey everybody. Cameron Hemphill, here your host for medical millionaire. Hey, first off, thank you so much for taking the time to tune into our podcast. Our goal is to give incredible value and insight into the medical spa market. So if you’re an injector, you’re in the esthetic space, the dermatology space, cosmetic space, plastics. This podcast, it’s 100% designed for you. My team and I, we have consulted with some of the top medical esthetics providers all over the country for years. We see ones that are absolutely thriving. We see ones that need serious help. So throughout this journey together, we want to help you take that practice your life to the next level. And what I want to get into today is really focusing on your craft, run your craft. Focus on your craft, enhance your craft. Stop doing everything else, outsource what doesn’t make sense. And what I mean by that is, you went to school for your craft. You worked very, very hard to learn your craft. There is a reason why customers come to you, clients come to you. There’s a reason why they continue to come to you. There’s a reason why they refer people to you. There’s a reason why you have probably had clients for 12345, years. Or if you’re new into this space, you’ve had a client maybe for six months, one year, whatever the customer lifetime value of that you cannot replace. And the reason why they keep coming back to you is because a they like your craft, they like the result. They like you, they like the environment. And you continue to get better and enhance your craft. If you do not enhance your skill set and your craft that you’re so talented at, and you continue to market, you will fall behind. They will go to somebody else. They will eventually find a new person to go visit, because you haven’t focused on your craft. And so I think a lot of times in business and in the world of medical esthetics, we can get very, very sidetracked, because at the end of the day, we’re running a business. Here we are running a business that’s meant to produce profits. Obviously, the skill set that we do enhances our clients lives, that’s why they come to you as they’re buying the end result they want to in most cases, look younger, feel better, have more self confidence, increase their overall looking image. That’s why they come to you, and that’s why they refer people to you, because they want their friends and family and colleagues to feel how they feel. Okay? So if you continuously focus on your craft, you will get better and better and better over time. Go to networking events, attend coaching, attend trainings. I see trainings popping up all over the place. They’re all over the internet, all over social media, even if you’re a world class injector and you are one of these people that actually has one of these academies or trainings, go learn what other people are doing. Get involved, continue to learn. I promise, there’s so much you can learn in this space. It’s, it’s, it’s just crazy, right? So if you are running your practice and all of a sudden you find yourself start, you know what I’m going to learn how to run my finances better, but that’s important. I totally get it. But, you know, there’s CPAs and there’s financial planners and advisors for that that are, that’s what their skill set is. It’s very important to, obviously, learn those skill sets and understand what a P and L is, understand a balance sheet, understand statement of cash flows, those types of things, you know, profit and loss, like net worth statements, those types of things, very, very important. But at the same time, there’s also people that you can hire and outsource that stuff to, so you can focus on your craft. A lot of times, I’ll see people say, you know, like, because, you know, we’re at growth 99 right? I’m going to build, I want to build my own website. It’s like, okay, I mean, I don’t know how you could, why you would want to do that, because there is people out there that actually, that’s all they do, and you focusing on your craft, you can actually make a lot more money by enhancing your overall education. And then also, like, producing income by focusing on your craft and outsourcing what you don’t need. You know, also, like, you know, doing a redesign of your current space, or learning something when it comes to business and how to operate your business from another angle, when you could just outsource something, or if you find yourself wearing multiple, multiple hats within your practice, and you know you have a position to delegate things, you need to start doing that, even though, like you could be the type. Bay like, hey, you know what? I can just do it better than anybody, so and faster. So I’ll just get it done. And if you find yourself just constantly, I’ll just do it better and faster and get it done better and faster. Get it done. If that’s a repetitive task, you need to delegate it. You really, really need to get back and focus on your on your actual craft. Okay, so I know, and sometimes when you start your practice, your practice changes. It almost becomes a different practice, like every quarter, because you start to scale, you start to grow, you start to hire people. Maybe you fire people. You have one facility, you go to two. Maybe you have one facility, you go to a second facility that’s twice the size. Maybe you have one device. Now you have 2345, right? Your business changed over time. Maybe you do $20,000 a month in sales. You go to $100,000 a month in sales. Shoot. You go to a million dollars a month in sales. Your business, in your in your practice, changes over time, so you almost have to take a step back, look at all your processes and change things, and you have to get really, really good at delegation and just trust the process.

Back to the show,
if you can remember back, and if you’ve had your practice for for a long period of time, you can look back and say, Oh my gosh. I remember when I used to send out, like the appointment reminders. I used to send out the review requests. I used to do. I used to run my QuickBooks Accounts and do like the matching and stuff like that. I used to order product. I used to, you know, like, it’s, it’s crazy to think at one point in time. And this all depends on where you’re at within your practice, of course, but you did do everything. And if you now have owned your practice for a couple years, you look back, you’re like, there’s no possible way. Like, how did I even do that? Like, I can’t even imagine, like doing some of the things that I used to do. And when you first get into into the business, there’s a lot of things that you do manually that you can actually leverage technology and start to automate the entire process and entire flow. And as you all know, I’m a massive fan of technology process automation, if it can be automated by technology, implement it, set it, forget it, get it done. So you can continuously automate things. And then what that does is it just clears up time. So if anything can be delegated, anything can be outsourced, anything can be automated through technology, buy it, implement it, get it off your plate, outsource it, and focus on your craft. If there is a company out there that is great at generating leads, hire them. If there is a company out there that is great at running online booking, hire them. If there is a company out there that is great at running social media, hire them. Somebody that does great video production, hire them, right? You can’t do it all. Okay? You can’t do it all. And that’s why, you know, when you look at overall like a team sport, right? You look at, let’s just take the Michael Jordan example. Michael Jordan was an amazing athlete, very, very dedicated to his craft, extremely dedicated to his craft, right? He would practice continuously, continuously, continuously, right. I don’t even think that guy stopped practicing right because he wanted to get better and better and better. And he hired coaches. He hired trainers shoot he hired Tim Grover as a mental health coach, right? So, because he wanted to focus on his craft and get better and better and better and so what I’m getting at is, if you continuously focus on your craft, people will notice. People will notice that you are investing in yourself. So people will notice that you’re investing in your craft. There is a reason why the people that continuously focus on what they are good at become good, great, amazing, Hall of Fame, well known legacy, because they continue to focus on their craft. They’re like, You know what? This isn’t worth my time. Like, I’m not going to take the time to build a website or build an EMR system, right? Like, there’s, there’s probably been a point in time where you’re like, oh, you know what, I wish this EMR system, just like, had that feature. Or like, oh, this report sucks. Or like, oh, man, I’m just frustrated. Like, it’s not running the way I want it to. I should just build my own. I guarantee that’s happened like I think that’s how a couple EMR companies were probably born, right? And maybe there’s fair reason for that, but at the same time, like technology, maybe it, maybe it’s not going to run efficiently, but for the most part, it truly does. And there’s a company that’s constantly focusing on innovating their technology and working on those things. And so if you are in a spot to where you’re like, you know what? I am running my practice right now, but I’m not really focusing on my craft. I have clients coming in. I’m doing injections. I’m like doing, you know you’re doing what you’re doing, you’re running the machines. It’s all great. But if you haven’t taken the time to, like, sit back and learn a new technique or skill set, or, you know, gone to networking events, collaborated within your own ecosystem, collaborated with team members that you work with. Like, there are so many groups out there in Facebook, like, there’s am spa is a fantastic resource, yeah, I would encourage you to get involved and really understand, like, I guess for one like, who are the great vendors within this space that are really innovating and helping, and who are the people that are that are creating, like, these new academies, these new techniques, these New on site trainings, these new on site learnings. Go to them, take some of your profits and go to them. You’ll come home with a new technique. You’ll come home with the with the ability to roll out a new product or a new service. Understand exactly like how these people have done it, right you have. Dr, G out there, Gretchen Freeling, right G face. MD, she’s in the Boston area. She does a lot of academies, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for her. She isn’t, first of all, an incredible human, very nice, very capable and extremely talented in her craft, and somebody that continuously focuses on her craft. Now she’s in a point in her life and her career where she’s built an academy. She’s helping others. She’s helping others and loves to help others. Shelby Miller is another one, exactly, right. So, so these, these women have built these academies, and they’re giving back to the community. And so it really, it’s like, if you haven’t taken the time, and those are just, those are two examples that really just kind of come to the top of my mind. You can go to, you know, room academy.com. I think it’s room of Science academy.com. G face academy.com. You know, you guys can go to. Those resources are great. And spa is also a great resource. Esthetic next, great confidence as well. But these are great resources where you guys can go and really just study and learn your craft and focus on your craft and realize, okay, like, this is what I’m doing. This is what I’m good at. This is what I need to focus on. Okay, now, what is my operation line? Who do I have, my team? Have I over hired? Have I under hired? Am I delegating? Should I delegate? Have I hired the right CPA? Have I hired the right marketing firm? Have I hired the right social media person, like, you know, like, there’s always the next level, right? And so again, like the whole point of this is to realize what you do for a living and get better at it, and just get better and better and better at it, and take some of your profits off the table and invest in yourself, because it’s going to pay you 10x the most important place that you can invest is yourself, period. Because as you get smarter and smarter and sharper and sharper, and I know most the audience here is very educated, it takes a tremendous amount of work to get you in a position to become a nurse practitioner, become a doctor, right? It’s very hard, lots of education and so as you should naturally, just you know, like education. So study your craft, focus on it. Stay disciplined to your craft. Outsource everything and go enjoy it. Grow your practice. Have fun network. I hope you guys have enjoyed this podcast. Thank you so much for turning into medical millionaire. If you found this content valuable, let’s share it. Keep the conversation going until next time. Happy injecting you.
