Cameron Hemphill discusses strategies for growing a medical spa business. He emphasizes the importance of identifying and addressing industry problems to create new business opportunities, citing examples like a plastic surgeon who developed an app to streamline workflow. Hemphill advises on delegating tasks to free up time, hiring staff for low-hanging fruit treatments, and outsourcing administrative tasks. He stresses the need for entrepreneurs to continuously improve processes, record workflows for training, and avoid self-sabotage or stalling growth.

Hey guys, what’s going on? Cameron Hemphill, here with medical millionaire. Hey, first off, thank you so much for taking the time to tune into our podcast. Our goal is to give incredible value and insight into the medical spa market. If you’re an injector, you’re in the cosmetic space. You are an esthetician, you’re looking to open up your first practice. Maybe you’re looking to go from one practice to five to 10 to 20 maybe even sell to private equity at some point. Who knows this podcast is designed for you. My team and I, we consult with some of the top providers throughout the country. We’ve been doing it for years, and so throughout this journey together, we want to help you take your practice to the next level. Let’s jump in. I want to talk about something that is on top of my mind lately, and something that has helped me grow my company, something that has helped other practices owner or other practice owners, grow their practices, their companies. And I know a lot of practice owners have multiple companies, maybe they have skin care lines, maybe they have academies, right? And so when you are in business, you always find yourself attaching to the existing. What do I mean by that? When you are in business, it creates opportunity. It creates ideas. If you have the heart and spirit of an entrepreneur and you open up a practice, by default, you’re going to find other potential business opportunities. That’s why you see people that open up a practice, all of a sudden open up a skincare line, all of a sudden open up an academy. Maybe they get into the tech space because they realize that technology is fragmented in this world of tech, right? And so it’s called attaching yourself to the existing. And you see it time and time again on when somebody puts himself in a position to start a business, realize, hey, there’s a problem within the industry of the industry that I’m in the industry of, right? And so I was just at a conference, had a long conversation with a gentleman that was a PhD. He was a he owned his own plastic surgeon clinic for years, and then all of a sudden, he’s a developer. And it was a cool conversation, because he went from being a plastic surgeon to being a software developer. I’m like, wow, those are like, two crazy skill sets, lots of schooling like and I was very curious. The guy was extremely intelligent, and he ended up developing an app called Jackie, which is like two way HIPAA compliant kind of communication with like uploading of photos and just super cool. And I know how he developed it, right? He developed it because he found a problem he was working in his practice, and he’s working his practice, and he found a problem that was a consistent annoyance that he couldn’t solve. So what did he do? He went out. He tried to find software solutions. He tried to find maybe different workarounds or workflows. He probably even rolled out a lot of different software components to solve this problem, and it just fell short on how he manages his workflow, right? And so what did he do? He was so determined to solve the problem that he went in, sold his practice, developed an app, became his own software developer, and learned how to engineer this app, and I think he was, he was showing it at the at the Medical esthetics conference, which was just super cool to see. Like, I’m always trying to look at new tech. I always want to see where the industry is going. I always want to see who the upcoming are. And it’s important to pay attention, and it’s important for you guys to pay attention, right? So don’t get distracted with, you know, understanding of what you are working with, in terms of the inventory, the products, the trainings, like always see what’s coming up, because that those are the game changers. Those are the people that are the disruptors. They’re going to come in because there’s been a problem for so long that it’s going to take somebody to solve it, right? Another great example, right? Look at esthetic record. Esthetic record. How did they start? Go look at their story. Right? You have a individual who has owned practices, medical assistance practices, he’s tried EMR solutions, he did not like what was on the mark. Market, right? And so what did he do? Right? He went and developed his own, his own EMR system, and now that’s called esthetic record. And hats off to all the success that they’ve had, right? And so you see it time and time again. So if you find problems that are within your practice, it’s like getting lucky and you can create luck by a just becoming an entrepreneur. And once you become an entrepreneur, you will find existing issues like, I can’t tell you how many times I have created different businesses with inside of our own business, of areas that need to be solved and improved, right? Because all an entrepreneur does, or anything that a product does, that you develop, it’s to solve a problem. We as consumers. We exchange capital for goods. That’s what we do, right? We wake up in the morning, we go to work. Why do we go to work? We exchange time and give our service in exchange for income, right? And that’s injecting capital into your infrastructure, your ecosystem. Now, why do you do it? Because you need the income to continue to keep going, right? You have all sorts of goods that you need to acquire, but if you sit back and really think about it, okay, I’m going to exchange my time for income, and I’m going to give skill set and value to the marketplace. By the way, the more skill set you have, the more value you give to the marketplace, the more income you make. So now, if you’re producing income, well, that income well, that income is going to go back out, right? It’s going to get flushed back out. You, you now need to go give that income back to society, whoever it is, to solve a problem that you’re having. It’s this ongoing thing, right? So you go to the office, you go to the practice, you conduct a service, you get income, cool income comes in. Now you got to go to the groceries, because you’re out of groceries, you got to go pull got to go pull the income out that you made and push the income back into the marketplace. Right? It’s that. It’s that simple. And so anytime, if you really think about it, like I’ll challenge you, over the next week, two weeks, month, whatever, every time you exchange $1 realize why you’re doing it. And there’s only one reason, it’s to solve a problem, that’s it. If you’re going to hire somebody, it’s to solve the problem of labor. You want to delegate things and getting them off your plate so somebody else can get that done and you can focus on what you need to get done.

So number one, attaching yourself to the existing I’m gonna pivot into what I want to get into next, which is really not only the art of delegation, but getting your time back. Okay, so you’re running a practice, your your practice is getting busy and busy and busy, and you’re in the point right now, you’re like, Okay, do I hire somebody? Do I hire marketing? Do I hire an assistant? Do I hire an operations person? Do I hire? Who do I hire? But all I know is I am maxed out, right? And you can call that hitting the pain line. Okay, so when you hit the pain line, you know, you’ve basically have, have ran out of time, and you’re either you have too many patients, which is a great problem to have, or you, you now you can’t work on your business, right? Because you have too many patients, right? And so by the time like, the day is done, like, you’re like, Dude, I can’t like, go do the accounting. I can’t go post on social media. I can’t like, this is just crazy. I I think I have a kid’s soccer game, you know that I got to go to, right? So, like, if you’re finding yourself hitting the pain line, you have to look at your inbox. You have to look at your calendar and how you can delegate things. Okay? Now in the world of medicine, medical, esthetics, cosmetics. Six, you are bound by time, right? And this is the industry that’s kind of interesting, because you actually have to exchange time for income. Your income revolves around appointments. No appointments, no patience, no income, right? And that’s that’s the world that we’re talking to. That’s the audience we’re talking to Okay, so how do you solve that problem? Number one, you need to go hire an injector. You need to go hire an aesthetician. You need to go hire somebody that conduct low hanging fruit treatments that can free up your calendar. Okay? And then, if you get back in the inbox and you have like marketing emails, you have to reply to those. CPA, you have to update your website. You have to update your EMR. You have to do charting. You have to do get back to leads. You have to get back to all your DMS. Like, there’s a lot to do right to run a practice. Oh yeah. You got to pick the lease payment just came up, right? Oh yeah, I got a product process, your insurance payment, pay the credit card off, order new product. Oh, running low on inventory, right? So there’s all this stuff that you have to do, all of those administrative things that you are doing. If you’re doing them, you need to get them out of your way. Go hire somebody. And the talent doesn’t have to necessarily be expensive talent. If you are overpaying for administrative things, somebody that can just order product for you, somebody that can reply to your DMS, somebody that can manage your emails, somebody that can make the lease payment for you, somebody that can make sure the insurance is good to go, reply to your Google reviews, whatever it is, these are administrative things. If you are busy and you’re not able to keep up with them, it’s time to make a decision and outsource those things. You can either a hire a virtual assistant overseas, very, very cost effective. Some of them are very good, and take the time to make incredible video training so you can replicate it. Okay? Because that person that you go higher, chances are they’re not going to be around for years and years. But if you’re building a practice to sustain longevity, your practice is going to be around. You’re going to be around. And the only way to scale is to monetize your time. So as you are doing these things, as you are ordering new product, as you’re ordering new inventory, as you’re paying certain things, getting into your bank account, getting into your finances, replying to a review, updating your charts, your EMR, your website, your blog, your social media, your DM have you’re doing record them. There’s a great tool out there. I use it all the time. It’s called loom, l, o, o, M, it will record your computer screen. It’s free. Get loom installed on your computer. It’s a Chrome extension, okay, and record yourself actually doing and then talk out loud. When you’re talking out loud and you’re recording this stuff, you can record this and you can replicate what you are doing. And over time, you’re going to build up a tremendous amount of content, content of what you are doing, of things that maybe in this point in time you don’t trust others to do, because what if somebody orders like, you know, 1000 units of Botox. When you needed like, 100 they accidentally put in one more zero. Uh oh, they just spent a ton of money, right? It’s that worry, that fear that they’re gonna screw something up, and that’s why you continue to do it, because you don’t trust anybody else to do it for one you need to let go for two. Record yourself doing it. Go hire somebody number three, take them through the training. You know, everything that you have created, make them train on it for a month. Give them a test. Watch them do things. Okay? Because you will get to the point where you get so busy that you’ll hit that pain line. Okay? Either you’re gonna self sabotage, right? You’re gonna stall because you’re like, I can’t take on any more patience, even though the marketplace wants to give you more patience. You can’t take any more on because you can’t handle it. Okay? So You’re stalling your growth. They’re gonna go somewhere else. You’re gonna self sabotage, meaning that you’re you’re done, like, you quit replying to emails. You quit, you know, just, just paying attention to patients. You can’t handle that anymore. The patients complain, you know, like self sabotage. Or, number three, you sell, right? You’re like, this isn’t what I want. My time back, my freedom, back, yourself. There’s a way to overcome all of those hurdles. Okay? So three, 3s, that I would continue to avoid, self sabotage, selling and what was the third self sabotage, selling or stalling. Okay, don’t stall the growth the market share wants it, okay, so figure that out. Make sure again, anything that you’re doing, make a training around it. Outsource. It, go to the internet, find an executive assistant, find a virtual admin, somebody that works in your time zone, replies to emails as they are. You right. Get your time back. Okay, so two major takeaways from this podcast. I should have broke this out into two episodes, but these are things that are currently going on, like this is current events that’s happening in my world right now is I have also been there, and I’m still there, okay? And so as you continue to scale and go, your your calendar is going to get packed again, okay? And then you’re going to get you’re going to hit pain line number two, which is great, because what’s happened is you’ve hit pain line one. You’ve now implemented what I just told you to do, right by going and hire somebody, have them manage your inbox, look at your calendar, delegate the administrative things to this individual. It’s going to create free time. When you create free time, you now are going to ask yourself, oh my gosh, I don’t know what to do, right? However you do know what to do. Go work on. What makes you happy. Go work on what is going to help you scale your practice. What’s going to help you scale your practice in other avenues, coming back to attaching yourself to the existing right? Figure out exactly what you want to do in your practice that’s gonna help you bring in more revenues, whatever area that is, okay? Then you’re gonna hit pain line number two. When you hit pain line number two, your calendar is gonna be packed again. In the same type of situation, you’re in the same type of situation, you need to go delegate again. Okay, you need to go delegate all of those activities to a person that is qualified that can handle them. Okay, get your time back. So if you’re constantly focused on attaching yourself to the existing and getting your time back by putting calendar and email first, you’re gonna have a much more fulfilled life. You’re gonna enjoy your day to day better. Your family’s gonna be happier. You’re gonna be happier. You’re not gonna like, feel like this massive amount of pain is on your chest and just like, full of emotion and about ready to implode, you’re gonna be able to continue to keep going, okay? You cannot be the same person you are now if you’ve been running like, okay. So if you open up a practice now and it goes from a zero to a million, you have to change things, okay? And in this world of medical esthetics, you can go from zero to a million in months, like I’ve seen it happen with people that have worked at other practices, and they go open up their own, all of a sudden they have, like, a million dollar business in a couple months. But there and then they just become so busy, they wish that they just went back to the old practice. They worked out because they had free time. They could come to the to the practice inject and bail. You know, so something to think about. Hope. You guys got a tremendous value out of this episode. If you have any questions, comments, want to chat about it, give us a call. Love to talk about stuff like this. Happy to help again. My name is Cameron Hemphill. If you found this content valuable.
